Seeds in the Ground

You know things have gotten down right weird when fantasies of scrubbing the bathroom, vacuuming or doing laundry start to creep in. What I want right now is a day of suspended animation, when animals don’t need feeding and plants don’t grow, a day when I can catch up on some desperately needed housekeeping.

But its spring and only one thought is allowed, “get the seeds in the ground!” In April, everything takes a backseat to planting. “Get the seeds in the ground,” I mutter trying to ignore piles of dishes and dirty clothes.

This year we’ll plant thousands of seeds, all with different demands, challenges and potential. 9,200 sunflower seeds alone will be planted at Dug In Farms. Yep, 400 seeds per week over 23 weeks. This week we sowed our final round of spring greens and the summer bulbs – Gladiolus, Lilies, Tuberose and Dahlias.With warm weather (hopefully) here to stay there’s no time for luxuries like housework when those little buggers are screaming for life.

So tomorrow I’ll grab another seed package, turn it over to remind myself of its planting instructions and be taunted by the annoyingly casual statement, “prefers well-drained, loamy soil with plenty of organic matter.
