Silly Selfie with the remaining swarm on a pear tree!
Spring time is bee time! The bees are moving so fast its down right difficult to keep up with them. But if you want to witness something magical come on over and linger in the front fields at the farm. Right now we’re awash with lush Crimson Clover and the bees are in heaven. Take a few minutes, walk into the field and stare down at the clover, suddenly you’ll find hundreds of honey bees hard at work.
As you may know, April through June is the normal nectar flow for honey bees in our area. We won’t harvest honey until July after they’ve put up extra. Meanwhile the queen is laying a thousand new eggs a day and the workers are gathering every ounce of nectar and pollen they can carry. Sorry guys but this phenomenon is all about Girl Power!
My challenge as a beekeeper is to stay one step ahead of them because if the hive grows too fast they’ll run out of room and leave (swarm) to go find new digs. The picture above is a selfie from this past weekend after capturing half the swarm on a nearby pear tree. Fortunately, the swarm is back in a hive and living in the bee yard. There’s so much to say about honey bees ~ they’re truly one of the great miracles on Earth. If you’d like to learn more let me know, I love talking honey bees!
As always, thanks for stopping by, Carolyn
