A Farming Fit

Not old but seasoned. This is how I think of myself these days. Seasoned is when you’ve been around long enough to know the truth of something without having to prove it out. And one thing I know is that problems rarely get better over time.
I’ve been reflecting on this since the weekend when I let go of one of the summer interns. Her tenure was only two weeks but enough time to know that a change had to be made, quickly. There were plenty of reasons for the dismissal but at the base of it farming simply wasn’t a fit.
So what is a farming fit? Isn't enthusiasm enough to carry someone? The truth I know now clearer than ever before, is that farming is pragmatism and patience. Steadiness and ease. It is hustle but never rushing. Farming is listening and observing, the qualities that in our amped up lives seem in short supply.
On the next go around I'll be even more seasoned and perhaps, when determining the next farm-fit, better equipped to employ those very traits of patience and observing. In the meantime I continue to be blessed by a wonderful young man who is working at the farm, volunteers who show up twice a week simply because they love growing and helping local farmers and countless supporters who come every week to the stand! As my good friend reminds me, I have much to say grace over.
As always, thanks for stopping by, Carolyn
