One Happy Camper!

It’s true ~ there’s nothing as refreshing as seeing the world through the eyes of a child. Especially 13 of them, all at once.

Today I got a visit from the “Farm to Table” Chesapeake Academy campers and what a time we had! Admittedly having a bunch of kids running wild on the farm makes me a little queasy. Heck, sometimes I get nervous when adults show up for a look-about. You can never predict the fickleness of a farm.

Before their arrival I ‘kid proofed’ the obvious, unplugging electric fences, storing sharp tools in a shed, crating Doug. But it’s a farm. Bugs still bite. Chicken poop is inevitable. And after a rainy night, fields are mucky.

They unloaded the bus, a mix of bright colored shirts and skirts and sneakers. Everything I love was their newest adventure. As we toured the farm, Trevor found the hidden zucchini I’d missed on my last harvest. Isabella confidently nudged a Barred Rock off its nest to pick up the egg from underneath the bird. “It’s warm,” she said in amazement. “Is it real?”

We calculated the number of honey bees that are living in the five hives. About 250,000, reported Eliza. They scattered about on a kid-hunt to find the errant chicken who hops the fence each morning. Her nest and egg were both discovered and she was delivered back to the flock. We planted pumpkin seeds and named them after Pokemon characters. Everyone had dirty hands from mixing soil so we washed them clean in a bucket.

Waving as their bus pulled away I could already hear myself bragging a little about how much fun it was having kids on the farm knowing full well I’ll be just as queasy the next go around. Ah, but today, I am one happy camper.

As always, thanks for stopping by, Carolyn
