ROBBED!!

It was inevitable. Everyone told me so.

The Dug In honor box was robbed. Not only that, its apparently been going on for some time.

I should have known something was up when Anne, a volunteer, brought me a dollar bill she found blowing through the field. Later that day, more dollars randomly appeared in the field. Even Doug got into the act, trotting up with a dollar in his mouth.

Someone must have left their money next to the box, I thought. How else could dollar bills be floating around the farm?

Then change started to appear. Out of nowhere, quarters, nickels, laying about on the driveway.

Finally, Sunday morning I pulled down the drive to put a cooler full of eggs out. A five, a one and several quarters lay on the ground.

My heart sank. A Saturday night prank, I thought. Some idiot must have shaken the box to the get the money out and missed the bills as they fell out.

I wasn’t sure what to do next. The honor box is a symbol of pride to me and to so many of my customers. It represents the fact that we live in a community that is both trusting and trustworthy. And now that faith and pride was shattered.

I opened the box and was surprised to find a few dollars still inside. And, stuffed into the corners and cervices, were piles of twigs and grass. The thief was building a bird’s nest.

A brick now rests on top of the box and will until after nesting season is over. I have to laugh knowing that somewhere on the property is a hardworking but disappointed Starling and probably a nest lined in dollar bills. Watch out for the robbers of spring, may they nest in comfort!

As always, thanks for stopping by!
