Schedule Me Off

From March until December my life is driven by a schedule. There’s a giant calendar hanging on the back of the kitchen door, dictating every move I make over nine months. Planting on Tuesday, harvesting on Wednesday and Saturday, seeding on Friday. Getting ready for the stand, working the stand.

Being sick is not in the schedule.

Still, Monday morning I woke up with the crud. Maybe its superstition or just plain ‘ole Catholic guilt but this bug seems suspiciously well timed.

Two days earlier I was skipping around the farm with great pride. After negotiating weather, broken equipment, and never enough hours in the day, somehow, we’d caught up. Over the course of 48 hours we’d put in five new beds, planted hundreds of seedlings, and seeded trays and trays of new babies. I double checked the calendar, it was official, we were on schedule.

Spring, for me, is like the first leg of the Iron Man triathlon. Its explosive and daunting. It moves fast. And sometimes it can leave you feeling overwhelmed for what comes next.

But we arrived at June on schedule. Remarkable!

The past three days I’ve done little more than swallow a bunch of DayQuil and nap every few hours. I’ve been telling myself if we caught up once we can do it again. With a few hours of work the farm will be back in shape.

But sickness breeds a lack of motivation. Lack of motivation breeds doubt. And doubt doesn’t lead to anywhere good.

As you can probably guess, I don’t like being sick. And I really don’t like being sick under pressure. But I’m trying to remember that the pressure is mine to turn up or turn down. It’ll get done or it won’t. No one is going to die and the world won’t end if the weeds take over.

Still I hope to feel better tomorrow. To be back at it with energy and determination. I hope I’ve paid my penance for a celebrating a little too loudly and that leg two of this Iron Man is as successful as leg one.

As you can see above not everyone was loafing this week ~ Jeffrey and Natalie put the roof trusses up in no time flat! The walk in cooler soon will be even cooler.

Wishing you a healthy and energized summer ahead. And, as always, thanks for stopping by!

Carolyn
