Nourish Your Soul

If there were a farm initiation it’d probably be harvesting okra.

Okra is relentless, growing several inches a day in hot humid summer. The tall tropical stalks throw off showy yellow flowers that must be kin to the hibiscus.

If you live on the farm for any amount of time you’ll soon be wading through the prickly plants snipping pods at a rate of 2 gallons a day. It only takes a day of harvesting before you’ll wear a long sleeve shirt and gloves to keep the itchy residue away.

But for us okra lovers, and I think there’s only about three of us, this is a ritual soooo worthwhile.

So it was a relief yesterday to read Jay’s entry in his Nourish Weekly Health Newsletter. It was all about the health benefits of okra. Yes, I learned something new which was fabulous. But really I was glad to know that the okra harvest hadn’t soured him on my favorite summer veggie.

If you haven’t met him already, Jay is one of the WWOOFers who is currently living with me and volunteering on the farm. Undeterred and always in motion, he is the dream roommate and farm hand.

It doesn’t hurt that he is also an awesome cook. Jay is a nutritional therapist, and makes his living helping people not only learn how to eat healthy but how to optimize their life through food. Dinners are a dream, both the food and the conversation.

If you come by the stand this weekend Jay may be out with a grill cooking up a thing or two. He is passionate about good fresh food and the farms that produce it. I hope you get a chance to talk with him. And I hope he spends more time at Dug In in the future.

As always, thanks for stopping by,

Carolyn
