The Building Boom

Looking at the farm these days you’d think we specialize in growing buildings more than produce and flowers. We’ve been under construction for the past six months.
A large plastic covered “high tunnel” grew up in the back of the east field last fall. The new farm market building, planned for nearly a year, finally got its legs mid-winter.
With the first of March and another season approaching, I cried uncle. No more big projects anytime soon!
The phone rang. Clark was on the other end. “You need a greenhouse,” he said. “And I’ve got one.”
‘Oh Lord,’ I thought. “Hey Clark, what’s up?”
Clark is getting out of the tomato business. There are health issues to deal with. No one’s getting any younger. And don’t even get him started on the whole stinkbug problem.
“I think we could get you set up before things really start cranking.” Clark thinks about things a lot and he was right. I do need a greenhouse.
The side porch of my old farm house is piled high with racks and seedlings and heat mats. For a couple of days each week when the seedlings get fertilized the house smells like dead fish.
I need to get the farm out of the house. I need a greenhouse.
The next Saturday my newest volunteer, Buddy, and I trucked down to Clark’s. In the howling wind we disassembled the structure. Three hours later the greenhouse was in pieces and the two men had bonded over stories from the 70s, crazy antics and well, probably women. I tried not to listen in.
Over the next week they’d work together, in the wind and bitter temperatures and another building would rise up from the field. The small greenhouse is perched next to the monstrous high tunnel. Mama Bear and Baby Bear.
Now I’m done. The construction ends. No more big projects. I’m disconnecting the phone.
We hope you’re able to join us at the Grand Opening and see all the new happenings for yourself!
A special thanks to Clark & Buddy, quite a team! And, as always, thanks for stopping by.
