Contractor Count Down

If there is one thing I thrive on it’s a deadline. The house needs a deep clean, host a party. Want to knock out a project, set an alarm and try to beat the clock.

My current deadline is this Saturday’s Grand Opening at the farm. Between here and there I’d like to get a hundred things done. To clean up, to finally fix what’s broke.

Fortunately a lifetime of trying to beat the clock has taught me a good lesson. The party will be a success whether or not the house has a few ‘dust-bunnies’.

I tried to remember this while coordinating six separate contractors in three days.

8:04 Monday morning, Glenn Lester arrives. Glenn’s team is grace in action. He knows what he’s doing. He’s fast. He’s reasonable. And he pays attention to me, a small job.

8:05 Dominion Power’s posse pulls in. Their trucks and trenchers dance around Glenn’s tractor. The guys play with Doug, the dog. They’re relaxed and efficient and in two hours they set me straight with a new power pole and juice to the building.

The week is off to a good start.

By mid-day the electrician calls for the electric inspection.

Shortly after four, Trudy, the toilet, is delivered. Now, we’re talkin’! No more dashing to the house between customers. No more muddy boots mucking up my hardwood floors.

Early the next morning, Jeffrey arrives to secure the bar to the market floor. It’s a beautiful bar that once graced the Chesapeake Chip Company and now will give friends a place to hang out, to chat and enjoy a drink.

We’re on a roll.

But sadly, any story that includes contractors can’t be all good. And indeed, one just couldn’t get his act together. The concrete guy. I won’t call him out by name here but if he doesn’t finish by Saturday there just might be a big sign on the unfinished slab.

There’s still plenty to do and while we’ll be hustling around getting ready for the big day, rest assured no matter how many projects we get done, you’ll still see a lot of ‘dust-bunnies’ in this house. Please ignore the mess and know that you’re visiting a ‘working farm’.

From the whole Dug In Farm Market team, we hope to see you Saturday, to share fellowship, good food and a good beer!

As always, thanks for stopping by,

Carolyn
