I've long thought a tomatillo to be a small tomato but they're an entirely different fruit. Tomatillos are the key ingredient for salsa verde. This easy recipe will start the juices flowing for salsa. You'll notice a few substitution/addition suggestions to suit both your palate and adventurous nature. Enjoy!

What you need:
5 medium tomatillos
1/4 cup water
2 hot peppers (jalapenos)
handful chopped cilantro
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions:
Peel and wash the tomatillos. Split and seed the peppers. Place the tomatillos and peppers under a broiler for about 4 minutes each side.
Transfer the blackened tomatillos, peppers, and any juices from the pan to a blender or food processor. Simply add the rest of the ingredients and blend.
This is the absolute basic recipe. For something different try adding garlic, cumin, and/or lime. Makes about 1 1/2 cups
